Behind the redwoods’ removal on Mountain View’s Shoreline Boulevard

The towering redwoods of Northern California are famous for their massive size and immense age. When Google proposed to remove over one hundred of these trees from Shoreline Boulevard in Mountain View, the response was less than joyous from Mountain View residents. But when the City Council decided to go ahead with the removal, there was little public outcry.

A combination of pro-cycling-to-work advocates, the trees’ poor health and plans to replace the redwoods with a multitude of eco-friendly trees helped make the decision more palatable. But some local Mountain View residents are expressing strong emotions about the decision. This Peninsula Press podcast above goes in-depth to find the roots of this issue.
