Co-op house thrives in middle of America’s most expensive zip code — Atherton

Silicon Valley is in a housing crisis. Rapidly rising rents are making it difficult for people of all ages to find affordable places to live in the area. In response to this housing pressure, many are turning to creative living solutions.

The “Athenaeum” is one of these unconventional housing situations. An “intentional community,” the Athenaeum is a collection of seven adults living under one roof in a home on a quiet, residential street in Atherton, California here on the Peninsula.

Organizing this kind of living situation is a difficult task, but it’s nothing that weekly house meetings and an adequate supply of Tupperware can’t overcome.

In the video above, Mike Grace, one of the house’s residents, shares the economic and practical advantages to living with so many other adults: the house not only provides an affordable place to live, but also a rich community experience.
