Super Bowl Viewership by the Numbers: A Lego Visualization

Since the first Super Bowl in 1967, its viewership has more than doubled. Using Lego figurines, this video illustrates the number of television viewers who watched the sporting event in five-year increments from 1967 to 2017. Each Lego figure represents two million viewers based on data collected by the analytics company Nielsen.

While in nearly every year, only one television broadcast the Super Bowl, both NBC and CBS televised the first game in 1967. For this year, we added together the viewership numbers for the visualization.
