A Wisconsin native, Lakshmi Varanasi graduated from Yale University in 2015 with a degree in history. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C. to work for national outlets like Slate and POLITICO Magazine, covering everything from hoverboard bans to the publishing industry. In 2018, she returned back to the Midwest and turned her focus to local journalism. She served as an associate editor for Detroit’s city magazine, HOUR Detroit, and received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists – Detroit Chapter for her reporting on autism therapy and sustainable foodways. At Stanford, she hopes to combine her interest in narrative journalism with data analysis to tell powerful multimedia stories both local and national in scope.
