Immersive: The Renovation of the Black House at Stanford University

Nearly 60 years ago, black students on Stanford’s campus came together to advocate for the rights of black and other minority students on campus. During an event known as “Take Back the Mic” or “Taking the Mic”, the Stanford Black Student Union listed 10 demands that they had for the University administration. One of those demands led to the creation of the Black Community Services Center (aka “The Black House”).

The space has changed a lot over the years, undergoing renovations.

In the past two years, students have carried the advocacy sentiment of the center’s founders with them in their efforts to remodel the space. The Black Imaginations Committee worked with various stakeholders on campus to redesign the space to reflect today’s Stanford Black community.

The Black Imaginations Committee included Fatou Barrie ‘24 ’26, Sky Walker ‘24, Zoey Hill ‘25, Zah-Nye Santiago ‘27, Kallie White ‘24 ‘25, and André Renay.

Experience the new space and learn about its design elements in the immersive video above.
