East Palo Alto pedestrian bridge construction delayed opening until next year

As part of the bridge’s construction, workers will also reconstruct the U.S. Highway 101 northbound off-ramp. Currently, the off-ramp, which pedestrians walk past often, does not have any traffic signs. (Itzel Luna/Peninsula Press)

Workers first broke ground on a pedestrian bridge in East Palo Alto in October 2023 that is meant to link the east and west sides of the city. The opening date for the bridge — which will run parallel to the U.S. Highway 101 overpass — has been delayed until at least April 2025. The delay was primarily caused by construction and design issues as well as expected rain in the coming months, project managers said.
