Special Olympics athletes overcome obstacles through basketball

As the sun rises above the gym at Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto, athletes with backpacks and duffle bags walk toward the open double doors.

Some are in pairs or small groups with fellow athletes, others come to practice with their parents. There is a mix of men and women, kids, youth and young adults. Some are tall and strong built, others short and rather slim – and many lay somewhere in-between.

Inside, about two dozen basketballs are waiting to get picked up and thrown around in what usually is GHS Titan territory.

But between January and March, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sundays, the Ravens are taking over the court. The Ravens are a Special Olympics basketball team here in Northern California.

Meet the team in the video above.
