Taking selfies with your ballot is illegal (for now)

Justin Timberlake has gotten in trouble for this. Many Americans might this election season as well. What is this potential pitfall? Taking a selfie of your ballot.

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed an exemption to a long-standing law against taking a photograph of a completed ballot in September of this year. Until Jan. 1, 2017, however, taking a selfie of your ballot is still illegal in California. The ACLU challenged the state’s law in an attempt to get the ban repealed before the Nov. 8 election, but it was denied by the federal court due to the “lateness of the request.”

Whether or not the voting population knows about the law is another question. In the video above, we took to an early polling site in Palo Alto to find out.
