It’s prom season for high schools across the country, but in Palo Alto Friday night, prom came to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. “A Journey Into Outer Space” was the theme for over 100 patients and their families at the ninth annual prom marking the end of the school year.

Organized by hospital schoolteachers from the Palo Alto Unified School District, the yearly event is open to anyone who had been a patient at the hospital in the past year and their siblings.

A community of volunteers, teachers and families created the galactic setting, complete with a flashing, moving R2D2. Donors supporting the event included DreamWorks, HP, Tiny Prints and Home Depot.

Event organizer Kathy Ho said all of the hard work came out of a mission to give patients and friends an experience they wouldn’t have a chance to get otherwise.

“And for that one night they can just forge that they’re sick and forget that they’re in the hospital,” Ho said.
