Thanks very much for this concise informative article. I’m a big shark lover. While diving in the Great Barrier Reef, I found sharks to be my favorite creatures under the sea. I’ve seen big sharks while surfing and they scared the hell out of me. None-the-less, I don’t believe they should be hunted.

I am opposed to shark nets. I’ve seen the damage they do to the marine biology in places like the Gold Coast, Australia and I don’t think they are the answer to shark attacks here in the USA.

We need to attack the sharks or their food-source. If we want to put energy into limiting the damaging effects on human life, I say we focus on the more detrimental issues, rather than limiting natural environment. Issues like cigarette smoking, car accidents, AIDs and domestic abuse have far greater damaging marginal effects than shark attacks. These issues take an enormous toll on the condition of humanity. Shark attacks are terrible events, but it doesn’t make sense to start limiting the population of sharks or seals.

It would be very interesting to see what victims of shark attacks say. Are victims proponents of destroying the shark population? There is a great article to be written on that topic.

we have had four fatal shark attacks on the pacific coast since the one in solana beach, ca. two in ca and two in mexico–which is a huge percentage increase over the last 100 years. the conservationists are well aware of this, yet since they believe that sharks are of more value than a human being, they do all they can to avoid protecting the human population. in fact they actually beleive that sharks are more important than the life or limb of a human being. i know this sounds strange, but it is absolutely true!! we have no shark nets in america the greatest country in the world????? the rest of the civilized world has nets–from south africa to australia, to hong kong. since the fishing of great whites was incorrectly banned in 1994 they have obviousley increased in numbers–we must allow the controlled fishing of the great white in order to control their numbers and thus help to protect the human population. we must also reduce the number of seals which are the fuel for the great white. you see what happens when man tries to take over nature? UNLESS WE TAKE THE STEPS ABOVE—NETS AND FISHING OF THE GREAT WHITE SCIENTISTS AND CONSERVATIONISTS WILL TRULY BE CULPABLE FOR THE GRUESOME DEATHS OF MORE AMERICANS.
